Q.5: Like most food origin stories, the popular Japanese breakfast food Natto, also seems to have been discovered by accident.

The most popular origin story dates back to 1080s when Minamoto no Yoshie and his army were travelling towards the Northern mainland Japan. One night, they settled down in a camp for a meal of rice and boiled soybeans. When they heard about the enemies approach, they quickly retreated, packing up their food in rice straws which was brought for the horses.

In just a couple of days later, they reached to safety and found out that the soybeans had turned into natto through fermentation with the help of the bacteria in the straw.
